Brenda O’Hanlon


Brenda O’Hanlon is a writer and editor with more than 30 years’ experience of producing marketing communications and PR-support materials, including, latterly, writing website text, intranet content and e-newsletters for global companies, and editing annual reports, technical reports and scientific research studies – to make them accessible to a lay audience.

In Ireland, her clients include the Health Research Board, Health Service Executive (HSE), Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and non-fiction publishers Gill and Macmillan, Folens and Orpen Press.

Her multinational clients in Italy and Switzerland include Clariant and SITA (for whom she provides communications support services, including writing/editing e-newsletters and marketing collateral). She also provides proofreading and writing services for Translation-Probst in Switzerland. Current non-governmental organisation clients include the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Switzerland; the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Italy, and UNICEF in Georgia.

Brenda is the founder of O’Hanlon Media and a co-founder of MasterScribes which provides writing and editing services, including developing content for reports, case studies and other technical materials. She is Joint-Chairperson, Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders and Indexers, as well as being a member of Irish PEN (which is affiliated to International PEN, the worldwide association for writers). She is also a member of the Basel Communicators’ Network and a former member of the National Union of Journalists.

Over the years, she has worked either as a public relations consultant or editorial consultant to senior management teams and communications teams in various government-funded agencies/public bodies in Ireland, including The Medical Council, National Library of Ireland, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), University College Dublin, National Advisory Committee on Drugs, the National Lottery and Valid Nutrition (a pro-bono client manufacturing ready-to-use therapeutic foods in Africa). Private sector clients in Ireland have included Jones Lang LaSalle, John Sisk & Son, Dunnes Stores, Stockbyte and Diageo (the Guinness and Harp brands).


Brenda O’Hanlon was a popular feature writer for the Irish Independent Weekend magazine (specialising in cover story news features and interviews/profiles); former contributor to Business and Finance (weekly interview series); Image magazine (feature articles); The Sunday Tribune (specialist in medical/health features). For a number of years she was an occasional panellist on the RTÉ Radio programmes The Sunday Show and Today with Pat Kenny.

In 2011 she took on the role of external consultant editor at the Inkwell Group, where she specialises in copy-editing authors’ manuscripts She is the author of two medical self-help books which were commissioned by Gill & Macmillan and were published in Ireland, the UK, the USA, Estonia, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Israel and South America.
